In 1994 the town purchased what was known as the ‘Steinachhäusl’, the former subsidiary building of an old farmhouse dating from the year 1698. This was then demolished and rebuilt true to the original next to the local history museum. Since that time the history of skiing in Saalbach has been on show here. More than 200 exhibits are dedicated to this Alpine Revolution, which started in this once forgotten lateral valley back in 1898. Past skiers and models of skis, the development of Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn and state-of-the-art equipment are brought together here. It also takes a look at the Alpine Skiing World Championships which were held in Saalbach Hinterglemm in 1991 and which returned to the Home of Lässig in 2025.
Through the centuries in Saalbach local history museum
The first mountain farmers settled in 1222, the church followed in 1410 and the first market came in 1489. Since that time the region has continued to grow steadily and this museum in Saalbach is dedicated to its illustrious history. An old farm fief dating from the year 1350, also rebuilt on this site and opened during the Alpine Ski World Championships in 1991 as ‘Österreicherhaus’, now provides information about the development of Saalbach. The permanent exhibition on the upper floor is dedicated to old religious and agricultural exhibition pieces, revealing antique craft utensils and earlier opinions and views of this area. The development of this area as a tourist region is also wonderfully reconstructed here. Exhibitions by regional artists change with each season can be found on the first floor.
