Alpine gravel biking in Saalbach
When it comes to the latest cycling trends, Saalbach is always out in front, with various gravel routes peppering the valley. So what is special about gravel biking? Whereas road bike riders need to keep to asphalt roads, gravel bikers also get to enjoy the wonderful gravel roads thanks to the well-designed geometry of their bikes and their tyre profiles. Pure quality time!
A wide range of tours provide the perfect start to this new on-trend sport. One of the most popular circuits to familiarise yourself with this style of riding is in the head of the valley in Hinterglemm. Here you get to experience Alpine gravel riding par excellence. 32 kilometres taking in 920 metres of ascent. The start is at the head of the valley – the route proceeds past Lindlingalm, Devil’s water and the Saalalm to the Ossmannalm. From here, the route continues to Hinterglemm. After that, follow the road to Hochalm reservoir, passing Rosswaldhütte, the Wieseralm and head back into the valley.
This circuit can also be done from the Hotel Thurnerhof – just hop on your bike in Saalbach and follow the Saalbach Promenade to Hinterglemm and to the head of the valley.

Cycling is on the agenda here - in the Bike Park for instance. 400 kilometres of bike paths and 80 kilometres of the finest trails on a total of seven mountains, on various trails and downhill routes into the valley. It is also easy to get from the Hotel Thurnerhof to the state-of-the-art cable cars – just a few minutes on the bike from the hotel doorstep you are in the versatile Bike Circus area.
